Event 7 Recap

$350 + $50 Modified Shoot Out No Limit Hold'em

A new tournament format is unveiled at the Borgata Winter Poker Open and the Modfied Shoot Out is a big hit.

Sean Wallace (Horsham, PA) defeated Gordon Eng (Cliffside Park, NJ) heads up to win his first Borgata trophy and the $24,381.  On the final hand, Wallace's K♠ Q dominated Eng's Q♠ 10♠ to win the the event.

"I felt like I was going to win," said the 23-year-old, "I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but I always feel confident."

The event began with two "sit-and-go" flights where two players from each single table advanced to
round two, a standard multi-table freeze out format.

"I feel like I have an edge in sit-and-gos which is why I re-entered," said Eng who earned $12,156 and just missed winning his second Borgata trophy.  Players who failed to advance in Flight A, had the chance to re-enter the event in Flight B.

Once both flights were completed, 300 players were reduced to 60 who were all in the money with a shot at the $105,000 total buy-in.

Familiar faces who cashed included the last woman standing Cathy Dever (11th), WPT Champion Will "the Thrill" Failla (18th), Event 1 (NL for $209,158) runner-up Tanios Abi-Yaghi (35th), Event 4 (PLO) winner Mike Linster (38th) and 2010 WPT Borgata Poker Open Champion Dwyte Pilgrim (54th).

In addition to Eng, other final table stalwarts included third place finisher Doug Klevitz (6th Borgata final table), and fifth place finisher Dan Buzgon (2011 WPT Borgata Poker Open 3rd place/$335,000).

"I've always been a big fan of this," said Wallace of the modified shoot out. "It's just more fun and out of the norm." And you can bet Wallace will be looking for this event on future Borgata Poker Open schedules.
